Barbados is known as the original cultivator of Caribbean sugarcane. Starting in 1627, after a few decades the demand for rum crafted from the island sugarcane soared. At the time, rum was well-loved by islanders and sailors, but it was only upon the return of many who offered up rum as a gift that it became wildly popular on the old European continent.

Though the demand for sugar has lessened, distillers continue to produce rum on the island using traditional methods. Using a special fermentation process, the original rum from the islands is distinctly rich and flavorful. Plantation Rum Barbados 5 year is the quintessential example of the Barbados rum tradition.

After fermentation, it rests for 3 to 4 years in American oak barrels. Following, it further matures Ferrand French oak casks for 1 to 2 years. On the nose are the aromas of freshly baked goods, tobacco, toasted marshmallow, and notes of raisin and prune.

The palate enters with a bittersweet toasted oak roastiness followed by a lighter toasted oak with baked orchard fruits, nutmeg, and burnt toffee. The finish is medium-long, with hints of cocoa. Subtle and tropical, this Barbadian style rum is wonderful as an aperitif or in a classic cocktail such as a Dark and Stormy.
