There can be no doubt that barrel finishes have become a prominent new way to develop compelling flavors and complexity to already exemplary spirits. Within that movement, maple barrels have quickly become a popular type of these finishes. However, with baking spices and maple syrup often being keynotes within some of our favorite bourbons, it is critical to make a selection that doesn't just amp up these notes and stop there. Building from our list of dynamic selections from Rare Character, we were introduced to their highly curated approach to maple barrels—from the sourcing of maple syrup barrels from a local farm to selecting just the right straight bourbon to offer a core complexity that blends beautifully with this finish. 

This bourbon, first barreled on 7/11/2016, is similar to a high-rye straight bourbon whiskey with notes of baking spices, toasted rye grains, chocolate, pancakes, and maple syrup on the nose. You'll discover cacao, vanilla, maple, graham cracker, and a touch of mint on the palate. The long-lasting finish is full of dark chocolate, ripe orange citrus, a subtle nuttiness, and an excellent ginger spice that gives you a beautiful warming sensation. When you might think that a maple barrel could overpower, Rare Character has proven how perfectly it can complement an already spectacular bourbon.
